Before the French Open 2017 started, I tried to predict how the draw would play out and I’m pretty happy to get lots of things right, such as the Wawrinka vs Nadal final. Find my original predictions post here. If you look at the table below you’ll see that I predicted Nadal and Wawrinka to be in the final and that Wawrinka would beat Murray in the semi-final (and what a fantastic five-setter that was!), but that Nadal would beat Djokovic instead of Thiem. It was difficult to foresee that Dominic Thiem would be able to beat the odds and his …
French Open predictions
The French Open has started! And it did so with mostly expected results, some tougher matches and some relatively easy ones. Let’s have a look at how my predictions fared: V = Correct X = Incorrect Not bad! I thought Medvedev would win his match, but he had to retire due to cramps. I also thought Robin Haase and his Prestige Classic would underperform against youngster de Minaur, but instead he won in straight sets. Everything else went pretty much according to plan. I thought Pouille would have to fight against old man Benneteau and his Babolat Pure Drive and in the …

Just as I and many with me had predicted – this was truly Novak Djokovic’s year in Paris (he’s not had a bad year outside Paris either). He beat Andy Murray in the French Open final with the scoreline of 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4Â and by doing that now holds all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. Astonishing. Whether Djokovic is now on his way towards overtaking Roger Federer and his 17 grand slams remains to be seen, but I would be very surprised if he doesn’t beat Nadal at 14. Djokovic is utterly dominant in the game right …
I had the feeling it would go this way, but still I really had hoped for more “tennistainment” in the two semi-finals of the French Open. But both Djokovic and Murray showed why they are the players to beat during this clay court season and after two clinical performances it was all set for the final I predicted all along: Murray vs Djokovic. Murray probably was the most impressive player, being able to throw everything back at Stan the Man Wawrinka with interest and Stan had not much to say about it in the press conference than “What do you …
After a rain-packed second week we’re closing in on the semi-finals at Roland Garros. The remaining quarter-finals happen today around 13 CET if the weather permits. Djokovic is taking on Berdych and Goffin is playing Thiem. Djokovic has an astounding 23-2 head-to-head record against Berdych so I simply can’t see HOW Berdych can beat the world number one. Goffin has 5 wins over Thiem’s 2, but on clay the Austrian is at his best and his game has been progressing in great strides this year. It’s going to be a tight match. My feeling is that Thiem wins it in …
We’re into the second week of Roland Garros of 2016 and it’s been a topsy-turvy tournament so far with Nadal and Tsonga leaving the tournament due to injuries. Thiem has been the most solid youngster (starting to be an established top 20 player) and Ramos, Gulbis and Gasquet has been surprises. My predictions haven’t been as confident in the latter rounds as you can see below. Can Goffin and Thiem show their potential and make it to the quarter-finals? I think so. Gulbis will be a tough opponent if his serve is on, but Goffin has been impressive so far and confirmed …
We’re two rounds into the Roland Garros of 2016 and it’s been a thrilling ride so far with quite a few tight five set matches. My draw breakdown and predictions are going well so far, but we haven’t seen a lot of upsets either. What I’m most impressed with so far is how well the youngsters are holding up: Coric, Kyrgios, Zverev and Thiem. They’re all still there and winning relatively easily. This is the top half of the draw with my predictions: My two main surprises so far is how well Bedene is playing – edging out Carreno-Busta in five sets …
The first round of this year’s Roland Garros is almost over (except for Zverev having a 2-1 sets lead over doubles phenomenon Pierre Hughes-Herbert) and it’s time to look at my predictions and summarize what’s been going on so far. Let’s start with the top half of the draw. I’m pretty pleased with my French Open predictions so far, especially on the top half of the draw. The X’s are predictions where I got it wrong and I have know added the correct name instead for the next round prediction. My pick that Brian Baker would beat Tomic was a …
For you who subscribe to my newsletter (to do so, just fill in your e-mail in the form below), I recently sent out an e-mail with my breakdown of the French Open draw. It looked like this (cut-down, low-res – pdf attached to the newsletter). I will follow up what I got right and what I got wrong at the end of the tournament. What I already can admit I didn’t see coming was Donald Young‘s loss to Gabashvili and Igor Sijsling‘s three set win over Ungur. Benoit Paire also had a tougher test than I imagined against Radu Albot. …
