Serve lesson with coach Miguel

I recorded a few lessons during my last trip to Marbella, Spain. Here is my serve lesson with coach Miguel.

In this serve lesson, we’re breaking down the serve phase by phase, starting from the stance, then to the toss, over to the kinetic chain and the pronation at the end. We also talk about important parts of the serve. The rhytm, making sure you try to surprise your opponent, the importance of having a reliable serve, how your whole game is only as good as your second serve and a few other practical points that relate to the serve.

It’s a large topic and we tried to cover as much as we could in a one hour session. This is not the last piece of content we’re making about the serve. I will let other coaches give their tips and point of views, since every player has a different serve. It’s the only shot we control fully as tennis players and it deserves a lot of attention.

I did make a video in the past about the serve with coaches Vijay and Nik Siwach. If you want more info and different perspectives, don’t hesitate to check it out. Sadly, I lacked the microphones back then to deal with the noisy environments that indoor tennis can bring.

Big thanks to Coach Miguel from Hofsaess academy for this serve lesson. It was interesting to get in depth into some of these topics. The serve is a very complicated stroke and there are so many moving parts in the kinetic chain, so it’s difficult to break it down in one session, but we tried it as an overview. Later, I might tackle individual parts and areas of the serve.

  • Where do you get a 1kg yoga ball that small for the warmup? The smallest that decathlon has is ~20cm - you couldn't hold it in one and and throw it like that. The smallest elsewhere that I found is 12cm, but I am guessing that the one in the vid is <10 cm?
