Maria Sakkari’s Racquet

by Jonas Eriksson

Maria Sakkari has made waves on the women’s tour recently, defeating Osaka in the Miami Open. But what is Maria Sakkari’s racquet?

Maria Sakkari is perhaps more famous for her strong fitness regime than her tennis results. She has plenty of workout videos on Instagram/Youtube and is likely one of the players that works the hardest off the tennis court. Her discipline has paid dividends with a quarter-final at the Miami Open where she narrowly lost to Bianca Andreescu. Surely there is more to come from the young Greek. If you want to follow a professional tennis fitness program, I recommend the courses at Martin Tennis Fitness Method, which I use myself and have reviewed on the channel. Anyway, over to Maria Sakkari’s racquet.

But what is Sakkari’s racquet?

Maria Sakkari’s racquets is the first generation of the Wilson Ultra. She endorses the most recent version (Wilson Ultra 100 V3) and you can find her current gear on Tennis Warehouse, Tennis Warehouse Europe and Tennis Only (any purchase through my links, will send Tennisnerd a small commission) But if you study the racquet closely, you can see that it has PWS (perimeter weighting system) tech on the sides, which there is not on the most recent Ultra.

Maria Sakkari strings her racquet with Luxilon Alu Power 1.25 strings. I’m not sure about the tension, so if you know, please comment on this post and I will update it.

The Wilson Ultra is a powerful racquet, similar to the Babolat Pure Drive, which Sakkari used in her junior years. It will add power to your shots, but if you have a sensitive arm and have suffered/suffer from tennis elbow, the setup might be too stiff and you’re likely better using a Clash or a more comfortable racquet.

It will be fascinating to see where Sakkari can take her career. You can check out her current ranking and profile on the WTA tour website.

Looks like Ms. Sakkari has changed up her stick since you posted this. In the 2021 US Open she was playing with what looks like a Wilson Pro Staff Six.One 100 painted to look like the Ultra 100 V3. One can tell it’s at least some kind of Pro Staff by the distinctive flanges at 9 & 3.

At yesterday’s Upper Austria Linz semifinals, where she lost to Petra Martic, she had an extra racket strung. You could hear exactly: “24/24kg with 4 knots.”
