Ash Barty Wins Wimbledon

by TN

We predicted it all along! :) Ash Barty wins Wimbledon after defeating Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-7 6-3. It’s her 2nd grand slam title.

Ash Barty wins Wimbledon after being ranked number one in the world in the WTA rankings and seeded 1 at Wimbledon. She was the better player all along in the final, but Pliskova, to her credit, fought well and came back from a set and a break down to win the second set 7-6. Barty was serving for the title at 5-4 in the second set, but got visibly tight, and was broken. The match then seemed to be in the balance, but Barty took charge of the third set straight away and broke to 3-0.

Again, Pliskova didn’t give up. She had come back in the second set and as long as she could stay in contact in the score, she had a chance. But after a dramatic game where Barty saved a breakpoint and had to scramble for a bit, she steadied the ship and finished the match in style. It was a nice end to an exciting Wimbledon final.

What does this mean for Ash Barty?

Barty consolidates the lead as the number one player in the world and since Osaka has taken a time-out from tennis, it looks likely to stay that way for a while.

“It was the most incredible feeling I think I’ve ever experienced on a tennis court,” Barty said in her post-match press conference. “There was certainly disbelief. I think I’ve worked so hard my whole career with my team and with people that mean the most to me to try and achieve my goals and my dreams. To be able to do that today was incredible.”

“To be able to be successful here at Wimbledon, to achieve my biggest dream, has been absolutely incredible. The stars aligned for me over the past fortnight.”

Well done to Ash Barty who handled the pressure beautifully. I am sure there are more Wimbledon titles to come for her.
