Western and Southern Open 2020

by TN

The Western and Southern Open 2020 (ATP Masters series) starts today with the qualifiers. Let’s have a look at the draw.

ATP tennis returns with the Western and Southern Open 2020. I have previously written about the Challenger tour already being underway in Todi and Prague, but it will be great to see some ATP action as well. It’s not the Western and Southern Open the way we’re used to because we’re struggling through a pandemic and the tournament has been moved to New York to create a tennis bubble for the US Open…BUT at least it’s tennis! And on the highest level.

So let’s be happy that tennis is back and have a look at the qualifier draw for the Western and Souther Open 2020.

Western and Southern Open 2020 – Qualifiers

Well, this is almost impossible to predict as we have not much in terms of prior results to base it on. Who has handled the “off-season” the best? Who can play his best tennis without a crowd? Who is in good physical and mental condition?

There are some interesting young players to watch in the draw like Jannik Sinner, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (recently seen practicing with Novak Djokovic in Marbella) Michael Mmoh, Sebastian Korda (son of Petr Korda) and Jaume Munar from the Rafa Nadal Academy. As a Swede, I will also enjoy watching our top-ranked player Mikael Ymer.

I think both Sinner and Ymer have a great chance of qualifying for the main event. Other players, I think we will see in the Southern and Western Open 2020: Andreas Seppi, Radu Albot, Jordan Thompson, Steve Johnson, Jeremy Chardy, and Gilles Simon. The players need to win two rounds to qualify for the main draw that starts on Sunday, August 23rd.

Updates to come as the matches unfold. There does not seem to be any live streaming available from the qualifiers, but TennisTV should get going from Sunday (I hope!). Check the daily schedule here
