It was a spectacular final performance against Rublev (6-2 6-3) that resulted in that Zverev wins the Cincinnati Masters.
Zverev wins the Cincinnati Masters after a masterful display of serving. The double-faults seem to be almost gone and with growing confidence, Zverev is increasingly looking like a threat for the US Open title. After all, he did defeat Djokovic at the Olympics and reached the final in last year’s strange spectator-empty tournament (he lost to Thiem).
The match against Tsitsipas in the semi-finals was the key to the title. The Greek was up 4-1 in the third set, but Zverev fought back and took it into a tie-break where he was the stronger player. Judging by the last two Masters tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, where Medvedev and Zverev won the titles, those two players look like the biggest threat to the Djokovic grand slam.
If we look at the decimal odds for the US Open winner on the men’s side, Djokovic is the CLEAR favorite at 1.75 times your money. You rarely see tournament winner odds this low ahead of a tournament, but Novak’s domination in the grand slams has been clear for everyone to see. Medvedev is number two in the odds ahead of the tournament at 5 times your money, while Zverev is at 6.50 and Tsitsipas at 11.00. Rublev at 34 seems a bit high, but he is usually more successful and solid in ATP 250 and 500 than at the top tournaments. Berrettini and Shapovalov are seen by the bookies as having similar chances to winning the US Open 2021 as Rublev. With Sinner, Karatsev, and Murray (!) following. For most people, I think Medvedev, Zverev, and Tsitsipas are the only serious threats to Novak’s fourth Grand Slam title of the year.
