Player to watch: Tim Van Rijthoven

by TN

Tim Van Rijthoven has gone from “nowhere” (#205 in the world) and won his first ATP tour title at the Libéma Open in Rosmalen, Netherlands.

In the final, he beat world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, with an impressive scoreline of 6-4 6-0 to capture the biggest title of his young career. This is what Wikipedia says about Tim Van Rijthoven:

Tim Van Rijthoven bio

Tim van Rijthoven (born 24 April 1997) is a Dutch professional tennis player.

Van Rijthoven has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 175, which he first achieved in April 2022 and a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 225, attained in May 2022. As a junior, he reached a high of world No. 13 in 2015 and reached the quarterfinals of the 2014 Wimbledon Championships boys’ singles tournament and semifinals of the boys’ doubles.

Van Rijthoven has represented Netherlands at the Davis Cup where he has a W/L record of 1–1. He has won 13 Futures tournaments on the ITF World Tennis Tour, including eight singles titles and five doubles titles.

He has been coached by Richard Krajicek and currently Paul Haarhuis.

His game is aggressive with a powerful forehand and a one-handed backhand, backed by a strong serve.

Van Rijthoven’s racquet

Van Rijthoven uses a Yonex Ezone 98. It’s hard to say which generation he is using, but it could be the latest one. He uses plent of lead tape around 10 and 2 at the top of the hoop.

Before the Ezone, he used a Blade 98, so it’s highly possible that he recently made the switch. If you have more information about Van Rijthoven’s racquet, please comment below or send me a message on Instagram.

What is in store for Van Rijthoven after this crazy week that saw him win his first ATP match and title in the same week? It’s hard ot say, but his composure and calm while finishing off Medvedev and the tournament shows a potential for bigger things.

Have you seen Van Rijthoven play? What are your thoughts?

I wonder what a player does to go from having never even played a single ATP tournament to suddenly beat not one but two top 10 players including the world’s number one (or was he still no.2 at that time?). The other being Auger-Aliassime at no.9.
This guy shot up 99 places to no. 106, that’s pretty impressive.
But even more impressive was that nice one handed backhand. It’s good to see there are still some players that have the ability to hit a one handed backhand.
Btw the score against Medvedev was 6-4 6-1 so no bagel, but still excellent!

Looks like Tim played the Yonex VCORE 98 for a while and then switched to the EZONE 98 some time around the French Open. Whether its actually an EZONE or something else with the EZONE paint job, I’m not sure.
