For the first time on the tour, we’ll see Jannik Sinner take on Jordan Thompson, ranked 32 currently. The match is being played on Friday at the ATP Cincinnati, 3rd round.
We can see that the Italian is a clear favorite at the bookmakers and it would take a lot from Thompson to get through this one.
Sinner, world no 1 in the rankings, is still the top player of the season following a superb start to the year. However, small injuries have been concerning at times during the summer and they don’t seem 100% sorted to be honest. Basically every loss this season has shown Sinner with some health related issue.
While that is the only concern, the Italian has shown he is still extremely hard to beat. In the previous round he beat “home” player Alex Michelsen (6-4, 7-5). The American shown great resistance but Sinner’s quality was, as so many times before, too much to deal with.
With 20 wins and 2 losses on hard-court, Sinner will be one of the favorites for the Cincinnati title. Last week in Canada he started strong but went out to an aggressive Rublev in the quarterfinal.
Thomson to struggle against a top opponent again?
Jordan Thompson didn’t get far in Montreal last week where he was heavily beaten by Sascha Zverev. In Cincy, his game has looked more solid, beating Ugo Humbert and Sebastian Baez, but against the real top players the Australian usually struggles.
Today he faces a really tough task, against the superb Sinner and we can only see one outcome. Thompson has so far been on the court over 4 hours in CIncinnati, compared to around 2 hours for Sinner.
Predictions for Sinner vs Thompson
Even though the small injury issues for Sinner is always a worry, this time we believe the quality between the players are just too much.
Thompson had a good tournament so far but it would take an extreme effort from him to beat the world no 1 today, and we predict it’s his last match in Cinci this year.
Prediction: We’ll go for a bet on Sinner to cover the Hcp at -4.5 at odds 1.75.
