Dimitrov vs Tiafoe Preview
Bulgariaās Dimitrov has been playing some of the best tennis of his career in 2024. He began the season off by breaking his title drought, winning that ATP 250 in Brisbane. Since then, heās been a consistent performer, making finals in Marseilles and Miami, and picking up six top 10 wins as he solidifies his own place in the top 10 again.
However, the 33-year-oldās form did drop slightly coming into the US Open. Since exiting Wimbledon in the round of 16, he won just one match in the North American hardcourt swing, losing first and second round in Canada and Cincinnati.
New York has seen his form pick back up though, with three straight set wins and then an impressive five-set victory over world No 6 Andrey Rublev most recently.
Tiafoeās tale of the tape is a little different. The polar opposite, in fact. Until Wimbledon, the Americanās year was very forgettableāhe had gone from losing at the US Open last year through to Wimbledon this year, barely able to string two wins together.
However, a five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz sparked his season back to life, and since then, Tiafoe has been red-hot. He made the quarter-finals of Atlanta, semi-finals of Washington and final in Cincinnati, breaking new ground in his career.
At the US Open so far, he has done what he does best: raised his level. Tiafoe is now 19-4 at the yearās final Grand Slam since 2020, having added wins over Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexander Shevchenko, Ben Shelton and Alexei Popyrin in the past week.
The reason why weāre backing Tiafoe to prevail against Dimtrov is threefold: the crowd, his track record in New York, and his more consistent form on North American hard courts.
Tiafoe seems to be in a better place mentally than he has been in a long time, and with his skillset plus the crowd behind him, itās hard to see Dimitrov stopping him.
