Purcell/Thompson
Purcell and Thompson have been in red hot form this year so far. The Aussie duo have combined for three titles already in 2024, with their first coming in Dallas in February. Since then, they’ve gone on to win two more in Los Cabos and Houston, working brilliantly as a pair. Thompson has also picked up a Masters 1000 title in Madrid alongside Sebastian Korda.
So far this Wimbledon, the No 15 seeds have been virtually unstoppable. They began their campaign with a win over Clarke/Willis in the first round, prevailing 6-4, 6–2. They then continued their straight sets form with two more routine victories, seeing off Martin/Middelkoop and Mies/Smith without dropping a set.
In the quarter-finals, Purcell/Thompson were pushed for the first time. They began strongly against No 11 seeds Gonzalez/Molteni, but dropped a second set tiebreak and were forced to go the distance, winning 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3.
Their best performance then came in the semi-finals, where they upset No 1 seeds Granollers/Zeballos, knocking out the tournament favorites in straight sets.
Heliovaara/Patten
For Heliovaara and Patten, they’ve emerged as an up-and-coming pair on the men’s doubles scene in recent months.
In early April, the duo won their first title together on the clay of Marrakech. Since then, they’ve been on a hot streak, winning Challengers in Madrid and Turin, plus claiming another ATP 250 title in Lyon. Losses have been few and far between for the two, and now they find themselves in a Grand Slam final.
Their run to the final at Wimbledon has been impressive. The pair also won their opening three matches in straight sets, seeing off Italian’s Bolelli/Vavassori 6-3, 6-4, Spaniard’s Martinez/Munar 7-6(5), 6-3 and Brazil’s Matos/Melo 7-6(1), 6-2.
In the quarter-finals, Heliovaara/Patten cut it fine, falling a set behind against No 4 seeds Arevalo/Pavic. They gritted their way through back-to-back tiebreaks, however, winning 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(7) to make the semi-finals. There, they ousted No 9 seeds Skupski/Venus in two sets, booking their spot in a maiden Grand Slam final.
Wimbledon Men’s Doubles Final Prediction
This will be a fascinating match up. Both pairs have been in brilliant form. Purcell/Thompson produced a stunning level of tennis to knock out the top seeds most recently, and came to Wimbledon riding a wave of form.
Heliovaara/Patten, however, have a ridiculous tiebreak record, winning all five they’ve played in London, making them a menace to overcome on grass.
Our prediction is that Purcell and Thompson will prevail here in an absolute classic. They’ve looked the slightly more assured team over the past week, and should have enough to get past Heliovaara/Patten in three.
Prediction: Purcell/Thompson to win 2-1.
