New racquet: Wilson Burn 95 CV

by Jonas Eriksson

Wilson is updating their Burn Countervail series with the 95 sq inch edition racquet called Wilson Burn 95 CV, endorsed by Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori.

I’ve written about the Countervail effect both for the Blade line and the Burn line and I really thought the update made the most sense for their stiffer offering, meaning the Burn (burn those joints!). For the Wilson Blade racquets I preferred the excellent response of the 2015 versions, but for the Burn line that, in my opinion, was a little bit too stiff for tender parts of your body, I think the addition of Countervail makes sense.

The Wilson Burn Countervail 100 is for example a favorite of one of my better hitting partners and was Tennis magazine’s editor’s choice of “Most Improved Racquet” (which I tend to agree with). But that’s the 100 inch version, the question here is if a 95-inch racquet is viable in today’s top-spin game?

Well, of course it is! 95-inch racquets such as the Wilson Six One 95 series, the Prince Textreme Tour 95 or Tecnifibre Tfight 315 Ltd are still highly playable and offer a combination of manoeuvrability and control that can be quite addictive. If you take softer versions such as the Prince Textreme Tour 95 or the Tecnifibre Tfight 315 Ltd, you might feel like the power level is low. But with any iteration of the Wilson Six One 95 or the Wilson Burn 95 CV, you’ll definitely get enough power.

Kei Nishikori endorses the Wilson Burn CV 95. You can buy the racquet at Tennis Express or Amazon.com.

There are a few things to be aware of the with the Wilson Burn CV 95:

  • Despite the addition of Countervail it can be a fairly stiff racquet.
  • It is an extended length racquet so might take some getting used to.
  • It has a relatively large sweet spot, but obviously not Babolat Pure Drive big.
  • The swing weight is quite high so it can be a challenge to serve effectively with depending on your strength and technique.
