Denis Istomin Tennis Racquet

by Jonas Eriksson

Denis Istomin gave us the biggest surprise of this year’s Australian Open (some say the decade) when he, ranked #117 in the world, beat six-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in a five set thriller: 7-6 (8), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

“I feel sorry for Novak. I was playing so good today.”

What racquet does Denis Istomin use? He endorses a Tecnifibre Tfight Dynacore 325, but is actually using an older version of the Tecnifibre Tfight 325 VO2 Max and strings it with Tecnifibre Red Code.

Istomin uses Lotto tennis clothing.

Some Istomin facts:

Besides beating Djokovic, Istomin is also known for being badly injured in car accident in 2001 and being deemed by the doctor never to return to tennis, but starting training again already in 2003.

Istomin’s only previous win in 33 tries against a top 10 player was in 2012 at Indian Wells, when he beat No. 5 David Ferrer.

Istomin had played Djokovic six times prior to their Australian Open match and never won a set.

Istomin is was born 1986 in Russia, but lies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He turned pro in 2004 and has since been coached by his mother. His only ATP tour title came in 2015 in Nottingham.
