Bio and Career

Jenson Tyler “J.T.” Brooksby was born on October 26, 2000, in Sacramento, California and he began playing tennis at the age of 4. Brooksby turned pro in 2020 after a redshirt freshman year at Baylor University, where an injury sidelined him. Diagnosed with severe autism as a young child, he was nonverbal until age four, a fact he revealed publicly in 2024, highlighting how it shapes his focus on the court.

Brooksby’s career took off in 2018 when he won the USTA Boys Under-18 National Championship, earning a wildcard into the US Open. There, he lost in the first round but returned in 2019 to claim his first tour-level win, defeating Tomas Berdych in Berdych’s final professional match. His breakout year came in 2021, with three ATP Challenger titles and a run to the Hall of Fame Open final in Newport, making him the second-youngest finalist in the tournament’s history. That year, he also reached the US Open fourth round—the youngest American to do so since Andy Roddick in 2002. His ranking improved from no 307 to no 56, earning him the 2021 ATP Newcomer of the Year award.

In 2022, Brooksby peaked at a career-high world No. 33 in June, after reaching the Dallas Open final and getting his first Top 10 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells. He also reached the fourth round at both Indian Wells and Miami Open. However, his momentum stopped in 2023 due to wrist surgeries and a 13-month suspension (originally 18 months, reduced on appeal) from the International Tennis Integrity Agency for missing three doping tests.

Returning in 2024, Brooksby used a protected ranking to re-enter the tour and we’ve seen some progress. At the 2025 Australian Open, he fell to Taylor Fritz in the first round, but at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open, he upset Félix Auger-Aliassime to reach the third round.

Known for his aggressive, physical style and mental toughness, inspired by Rafael Nadal, Brooksby continues to rebuild his promising career.
