Bio and Career

Liudmila Samsonova was born on November 11th, 1998, in Olenegorsk, Russia, but her family moved to Italy when she was just 1 years old. She began playing tennis at the age of six and was for a few years later on representing Italy professionally before switching to playing for Russia in 2018.

Her junior peak was no 65 in 2016, but her pro breakthrough came in 2021 with her first WTA title at the Berlin Ladies Open, defeating Belinda Bencic as a qualifier ranked number 106, the lowest-ranked champion in the event’s history. She had a good year in 2022, winning three titles: the Washington Open, the Cleveland Open, and the Tokyo Open (over Zheng Qinwen), reaching the US Open fourth round and getting into the Top 20.

With five WTA singles titles (her fifth at the 2024 Rosmalen Grass Court Championships over Bianca Andreescu), Samsonova’s recent highlights include a Dubai quarterfinal run, upsetting No. 8 Ons Jabeur. Her best Grand Slam result remains the 2021 Wimbledon fourth round. Liudmila has also won 8 singles and three doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.

Samsonova reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of number 12 in February, 2023, and a peak doubles ranking of number 40 in February, 2025. Currently, she stands at no 19 in the WTA rankings.
