HEAD Gravity Auxetic Review

by TN

The new HEAD Gravity racquets have been revealed. I have been testing them for a while. Here is my HEAD Gravity Auxetic Review.

HEAD Gravity Auxetic Review

The HEAD Gravity Auxetic racquets will be on sale in April. Make sure to watch this space and our friends at Tennis Warehouse, Tennis Warehouse Europe, and Tennis Only. Some of the older Gravity racquets are on sale now, so that is also a good option if you want to save some money. How different is the new HEAD Gravity Auxetic? This review will tell you.

Tech (and video review)

The video review spends some time explaining what Auxetic is. It is not a new material but a technology where the carbon fibers expand and contract. This technology works differently on different racquets. On some of the HEAD racquets I have tested, like the Speed and Extreme (click for my review) it worked well, but I wasn’t as happy with it on the 2021 Prestige.

On the Gravity racquets, I feel like the Auxetic technology improves the stability and the feel when hitting the ball. It almost feels like the sweet spot is slightly larger. This is not a huge change, but it is a noticeable one.

Specs

I have tested the HEAD Gravity Auxetic Pro, Tour and MP. The specs are unchanged from the previous generation.

HEAD Gravity Auxetic Pro

The Pro is the most demanding option with its high swing weight. But advanced players have loved this racquet since it came out some years back, and the Auxetic edition is a slightly refined version of this excellent racquet model. This was my favorite when the Gravity line was released, but I have since learned that it is a bit too demanding for my game, so now I prefer the Tour.

If you have the chops for this one, it delivers great stability, control, feel, and some unexpected power on serve. All advanced players who crave control should consider this one.

HEAD Gravity Auxetic Tour

The Tour is the in-between option and a better choice for intermediate to advanced players that don’t enjoy the heft of the Tour. The slightly thicker beam of the Tour helps with power and stability. It is not quite as controlled and solid as the Pro, but good enough for most players. It also offers some room for customization.

HEAD Gravity Auxetic MP

The MP is lighter, offers more spin potential with the 16×20 pattern, and has plenty of room for customization also for stronger players. Still, it is more controlled than most other racquets in the 295-300g range. But if you want a lighter control frame with an above-average sweet spot for control racquets, the MP version is the way to go.

Head Size: 100 in / 645.16 cm
Length: 27in / 68.58cm
Strung Weight:11oz / 312g

Summary

The HEAD Gravity Auxetic racquets are an improvement over the predecessors. A refined feel, better stability and a tad bigger sweet spot seems to be the result of the new technology. The Gravity line is an excellent choice for players looking for control, but who want a larger sweet spot and more forgiveness than traditional control racquets with smaller head sizes. The stability is excellent and it moves fast through the air thanks to the thin beam.

I would love to see a prostaff, shift, gravity comparison. I have been using the prostaff for awhile from the blade pro. Just switched to the shift 315 and am getting more spin and power, which helps me keep the ball in play more. How am I getting more spin out of an 18×20 string pattern? Would like to try the shift 300 too, but it’s hard to get all the rackets I want to try!

Is it a big enough improvement to justify the extra $150? The 2021 version is on a heavy sale now…tempted.

Not sure it is worth 150 USD tbh, but I like the new one slightly more.

Have you heard any complaints of the auxetic frames cracking easier When hitting ground on volleys serves or overheads?? Obviously not throwing. My sons extreme tour cracked on first day. All we can think of when serving or when picking up low half volleys and racquet hits ground. So weird

Hmmm…no I have not heard that. You should maybe be able to get some warranty claim out of that situation.
