Andy Murray to coach Novak Djokovic

by Jonas Eriksson

Yes, this is not a prank or April Fools. Andy Murray is to coach Novak Djokovic through the Australian Open 2025.

This must be one of the more surprising stories to come out of the tennis world in a while. People are getting ready for the Davis Cup final between Italy and the Netherlands tomorrow, but this one got social media buzzing well before that.

Novak Djokovic is the last man standing of what was once called the “Big Four” (Fantastic Four, could have been better arguably). Murray retired earlier this year and you thought he might take a little break from tennis, but he is right back in it as Djokovic’s coach. At least for a month until the Australian Open 2025 finishes.

Will this powerful and popular addition to the team help Djokovic reach a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam? It is possible!

Both Novak and Andy are 37 years old, born a week apart in May 1987. They have faced each other since the junior days and met 36 times as tennis pros, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 25-11.

What can Andy Murray bring to the team?

Most people know Andy as a formidable reader of the game of tennis. From how he has talked in his press conferences, to how he played his matches, it was a very cerebral way. He understands the game on the highest level and was the most likely of the big four to turn into a coach of some kind. However, no one expected it to happen this soon.

But maybe it would be an excellent time for Andy to see if he could bring something extra to Novak’s table. And if he can, even they don’t stay working after the first grand slam of the year, it could be a sign of things to come for Murray’s post-playing career.

Time will tell. But no matter how it goes, exciting news for the tennis world: Andy Murray to coach Novak Djokovic!
