Djokovic wins the ATP Tour finals for the 6th time. Surprising news? Not really. He is still the guy to beat on hard courts.
Djokovic wins the ATP Tour Finals for the 6th time
There were many tight matches, but like Dennis and I predicted in the Tennisnerd podcast, Djokovic was a bit too strong for the rest. He has that extra mental reserve that he can draw from when the matches get tight. I don’t think the tennis world has seen a more mentally resilient player. Maybe he shares the first spot with a certain Rafael Nadal, but they are for sure the GOATs regarding mental strength on a tennis court.
What does his win mean for 2023? Djokovic has received an okay to play in the Australian Open and will arrive at the first grand slam of the year as the favorite to win his tenth trophy down under. I am sure the odds favor him pretty heavily at the moment.
Who rules in 2023?
Who will win the Grand Slams in 2023? After ending this year as world number one, Carlos Alcaraz comes in with some pressure. But Djokovic did not play in the Australian Open or the US Open, and Wimbledon didn’t count in terms of ranking points. So I am sure he enters the year motivated to climb to the top of the leaderboard again and overtake Rafael Nadal in the number of slams.
Rafael Nadal will be the favorite for the French Open, but the Australian Open and Wimbledon are surely heavily tilted toward Djokovic. This does not mean we can count out the younger generation. Alcaraz, Auger-Aliassime, Rune, Fritz, Shapovalov and the other top young players are getting stronger and should have the belief that they can compete with the GOATs even for grand slam titles.
It will surely be an exciting tennis year. Who do you think will hold the number one ranking at the end of it?
