Dominic Thiem has announced via his social media accounts that he plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season.
The 30-year-old Austrian claimed recurring injury problems, specifically issues with his wrist, forced him to make this hard decision.
“Thought long about this”
Dominic had hinted already in the beginning of the year that it might be his last season and now it’s all been confirmed.
He talks on his Instagram account about how these are his “inner feelings” and he though long about this, but in the end it’s the “only right thing” to do. He feels happy about it now but is of course thankful for all the success and trophies that the career has brought him.
17 Career Titles
Thiem had a very successful career with 17 ATP Tour singles titles. His latest big trophy was of course the US Open win back in 2020 when he defeated Alexander Zverev in a five-set marathon match. Since then, unfortunately, he has suffered a number of injuries which has kept him away from the top level we got used to seeing him at.
Already at the start of the 2021 season, we saw his form dip quite significantly with a 9-9 w/l record on his 18 matches. He clearly lacked motivation following issues with his knee and most of all, his on-going wrist problems.
He achieved a career-high ranking of 3rd in March 2020. Right now Thiem is ranked 117 and just recently lost a Madrid Masters qualifier against Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets.
The Austrian also played in the Roland Garros final in 2018 and 2019 as well as the Australian Open final in 2020.
To Retire in Vienna
Thiem is set to play his last event at the Vienna Open, (21-27 October, 2024), where he will be able to say a proper goodbye to the home fans.
