French Open Day 10: Slow Day But Big Match

by Jonas Eriksson

Today we only have two men’s matches to look forward to, the final set of the Murray vs Troicki match and the big excitement and crowd pleaser of the day, Roger Federer vs Gael Monfils.

Monfils might very well be playing the best and most solid tennis of his life, but is it enough against the Swiss maestro who looks more inspired than in a long, long time?

Federer leads their head to head 5-1 but the last match they played was in Paris 2010 (indoors) and Monfils won it in three tight tiebreak sets.

This together with the strong crowd support will make Monfils believe that he can beat Federer and this will in turn increase his chances of course. But I think Federer is in too much of a playing mood and has too much variety to his game to win this match. It won’t be without trouble, I think it will go four sets, but he will come through and setup the dream semi-final against Djokovic.

One last comment about the Murray vs Troicki finish. Head to head stats 3-0 in matches, 42-16 in games. Troicki was never competitive against Murray, so this is a big step forward, but on the other hand, will he be able to forgive himself for squandering a 2-0 lead and start with a fresh head?

This set has Murray written all over it.
