Jakub Mensik defeats Rublev

by Jonas Eriksson

Have you heard about Jakub Mensik? If not, then it is worth your while. Here is another young talent to put on your radar.

Jakub Mensik is 18 years old and comes from the Czech Republic, usually more known for its excellent group of players on the WTA tour, but with a strong tennis past also on the men’s side with players like Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych.

Berdych is an inspiration for Mensik, and you can see that in the way he plays. Fearless. Big power from both sides, no problems in taking risks.

Mensik has just beaten world number five, Andrey Rublev, in the quarter-finals of the Doha ATP 250 in straight sets 6-4 7-6. Like with Joao Fonseca, it is difficult not to be impressed with this teenager, but we know that we should be careful in hyping players too much and too soon.

Let’s look at some facts about Jakub Mensik.

Who is Jakub Mensik?

  • Age 18: (2005.09.01)
  • Weight: 184 lbs (83kg)
  • Height: 6’4″ (193cm)
  • Turned pro: 2022
  • Country: Czech Republic
  • Plays Right-Handed, Two-Handed Backhand
  • Coach: Tomas Josefus

Mensik started his Doha campaign by beating Murray in three tie-break sets, so he is not exactly lacking in the mental department, which is rare for players who play aggressively and take risks. But it is easier to be fearless when you have nothing to lose and against players like Murray and Rublev, Mensik can play without pressure. Although, we all know how easy it is in tennis to get tight when you are near the finish line of an important win.

He started his tournament with another quality win against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. So, three top wins in one tournament. Stellar performance.
