Kyrgios withdraws and hands Federer semi-final spot

by Jonas Eriksson

It was a highly anticipated match. Federer (and especially his one-handed backhand) was on fire against Nadal in his 6-2 6-3 win and Kyrgios looked supremely confident in his straight sets win over Djokovic. They had only played once, with Federer losing a narrow battle after three tie-breaks. But Kyrgios had to withdraw due to illness. This is what he shared on social media:

A big shame for both Nick and tennis fans the world over. People immediately started speculating (as a joke, obviously) if the snack he got from a man in the stands during his late night doubles encounter was the root of his stomach problems:

Shame about the contest, but Federer moves on to the semi-finals where he will play either Jack Sock or Kei Nishikori. In the other semi-finals we have Stan the Man Wawrinka playing Pablo Carreno-Busta. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a Swiss final in Indian Wells this year, but three more matches before we get to that.

Sock or Nishikori? Tough one! I think Nishikori might be an outside to the title, even with Federer and (likely) Wawrinka still to come so I’ll put my money on him.
