Medvedev a new world number one?

by Oddspunter

Is Daniil Medvedev a new world number one after this week? If he wins the ATP 500 in Acapulco he will climb ot the top of the rankings.

We have gotten used to Novak Djokovic hanging out in the top of the rankings for years. He is now up to 363 weeks as number one or something along those lines. But this can all change after this week. Is Medvedev a new world number one a few days from now? He needs to win Acapulco for this to happen and it's a strong field he needs to get through.

The road to the top spot

Medvedev starts against Benoit Paire. That doesn't sound like much of a challenge for the super solid Russian, but Benoit on a good day can beat pretty much anyone. Does he have a good day? We will see! If you're into betting, you can check out this website for odds.

Medvedev's road to the semi-finals looks relatively comfortable if he is in decent form. But in the semi-finals he might face a familiar foe in Rafael Nadal. I am actually surprised to see Nadal playing another hard court event so soon after the gruelling Australian Open. But this is Rafa and he needs to play a lot of tennis! 🙂

The draw is not only Rafa and Medvedev. We also have names like Berrettini, Tsitsipas and Zverev in the draw. An interesting first round encounter is the one between Zverev and Brooksby. Brooksby is an exciting new player that should be able to trouble Zverev with his crafty game.

We should not forget about in-form Cameron Norrie who comes to Acapulco with a recent title. Norrie is one of those players that works kind-of silently behind the scenes, racking up the wins…

It will definitely be a fun tournament to follow. Who do you have as the title holder after this week?
