Jannik Sinner just claimed the Miami Open title for the first time and he did it in style by beating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) in a very one-sided final.
The 22-year-old has been playing tennis on a different level than anyone lately and after crushing Medvedev 6-1, 6-2 in the semis, many felt another big win was coming.
Sinner making history
With this final win, Sinner claimed the number 2 spot in the ATP rankings and this makes him the first Italian tennis player ever to reach the Top 2 (ATP and WTA). This will happen officially on Monday when the new rankings are out.
Not only that, he’s also the only Italian tennis player to (1) win the Miami Open and (2) to win multiple Masters 1000 titles!
No chance for Dimitrov
Grigor Dimitrov has been in fantastic form this tournament and looked at his best against Carlos Alcaraz, not at least. This is not enough though, against an Italian that is just too complete and too strong at the moment.
The Bulgarian started the match strong and made Sinner commit some errors but it didn’t take many games for the Italian to get his game going. He’s just not making any mistakes and has an amazing ability to turn defending positions into winning ones. At one point in the game he was winning 50/50 points on Dimitrov’s attacking plays…
After a confident 6-3 win in the first set, the second one was just a walk towards the trophy and he only gave one game away.
It’ll be interesting to see if Sinner’s dominance will continue over the clay season.
