Federer withdrew from Madrid Masters yesterday and instead went with his wife to the hospital where she later on delivered another set of twins (they already have twin daughters, Charlene Riva and Myla Rose). This time two boys (Leo and Lenny). Big congrats from Tennisnerd to the happy couple! Four kids, each one surely a grand slam.
That was one Swiss man, “twinning” in life. On the tennis court, another Swiss man surprisingly lost to an Austrian youngster in Dominic Thiem. It was Grand Slam champion Stan the Man Wawrinka who bit the red dirt in a topsy-turvy 6-1 2-6 4-6 affair.
And it wasn’t like Wawrinka was off his game or in any way uncomfortable. He played well, but not as good as his opponent who was hitting backhand and forehand winners in all directions. The youngsters are coming into their own now and one threat to the top players is 20-year-old Thiem. He’s my favourite to get into the top 5 together with Dimitrov and Nishikori.
So congrats to Dominic Thiem for the biggest win in his career, but most of all to Mirka and Roger Federer who extended their family in a beautiful way.
