Bernard Tomic is a talented but controversial tennis player. He is particularly known for tanking. After years of lacklustre performances, Tomic is back.
Tomic has won four titles and reached 17 in the world in 2016. In 2021, he had a 1-1 win/loss record and was only featured in the headlines for dating a Vanessa Sierra from Love Island and Onlyfans “fame”. Tomic has been infamous for his partying and “I don’t give a shit”-attitude. Now he claims to want to give tennis a serious go again. Has he come to his senses or is he just out of money? No matter what the reason is, Tomic is back on tour in 2022.
Can he be successful?
No matter what you think about Bernard Tomic, it’s difficult to deny his talent. He has great timing and reads the game really well. His forehand is quite peculiar for an ATP player (see an example of it below).
Tomic hits the ball flat and mainly seems to redirect the pace from his opponents. Can bring that game back into the top 20?
I find it difficult to see. Tennis is moving at a fast pace and the top ten players today are extremely well-rounded. They serve well, hit great groundstrokes from both wings, move excellently and seem to have almost no weaknesses. No matter how strong your talent is, not playing for a few years can’t be conducive to coming back at any level.
And how much has Tomic really changed? Has he started to care about the game and his place in it? Or is this just media fluff? It’s difficult to say without seeing him play. He has dyed his hair blonde so that’s always something!
