Predictions Semi-Finals Australian Open 2017

by Jonas Eriksson

My predictions for the Australian Open wasn’t very good ahead of the tournament, but round-by-round they’ve been pretty decent. And now it’s really getting mouthwatering with both Federer and Nadal in the semi-finals, only one step from another classic Fedal final. Can it be?

Federer vs Wawrinka is the battle of the Swiss and it’s one where maestro Federer has an overwhelming head-to-head record (18-3), but their last Grand Slam match in the Roland Garros quarter-finals 2015, Wawrinka won in straight sets (he later won the tournament). Wawrinka is ranked three in the world and has won a slam the last three years. Federer has recently described him as a “clutch” player, but is he clutch enough to refuse Federer another slam final and a chance to win title number 18?

It’s very difficult to say. I think based on previous play and their head-to-head record, Federer is the favorite by quite a slim margin and I’m going to pick him as the winner based on that. But you never know with Wawrinka when you get to the later stages of slam. Howeverm millions of Federer fans will hope that this time, it’s Fed’s time. And the bookmakers at Bet365 seem to agree.

Nadal vs Dimitrov are both unexpected to see in the semi-finals. Dimitrov seems to finally make something of that massive potential of his and Nadal looks re-energized under the tutelage and support of friend Carlos Moya. Nadal has fought and fought and fought through the tricky draw and looks a hundred percent ready and fit for another final. He has a 7-1 head-to-head advantage versus Dimitrov, but the Bulgarian baby Federer won their last match in straight sets in Beijing. But that match wasn’t played by this Nadal.

I think Nadal will win and I think he gets it done in three sets.

Do you think we can finally get another Fedal (Nadal vs Federer final)? Let me know in the comments!
