Alex Mann is back with Wimbledon 2022 day 2 predictions. Sadly, we had to strike Berrettini’s match due to a positive Covid test.
Wimbledon 2022 Day 2 Predictions
You know The Championships are well underway when the sun and the rain cast their spells over Wimbledon. Although some matches had to be canceled, day one produced some wonderful moments and some early shocks.
Djokovic, Jabeur, Alcaraz and Murray all progressed to the second round but the 2021 semi-finalist and 7th seed Hubert Hurkacz, has been knocked out of the tournament alongside the in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia.
I correctly predicted 5 out of the ten matches I previewed yesterday, including Alcaraz’s win in 5 sets. Let’s see if we can do even better today.
Centre Court
Iga Swiatek (1) vs Jana Fett
Can the world number 1 add to her 35-match winning streak and continue her astounding form this year on the grass? Swiatek hasn’t played any tournaments since her devastating Roland Garros victory, but this shouldn’t be much of a concern. She made the fourth round of The Championships last year and is a former junior Wimbledon champion. Jana Fett has shown that she can play on the grass, having won three matches to qualify for Wimbledon, though this will be a stretch too far.
Prediction – Swiatek in 2 sets
Rafael Nadal (2) vs Francisco Cerundolo
Rafael Nadal returns to Wimbledon for the first time in three years and faces world number 41, Francisco Cerundolo. Rafa hasn’t played any tour-level grass-court tournaments this season, but this shouldn’t be a worry for the 22-time major champion. He’s a two-time Wimbledon champion and has reached the semi-finals in his last two appearances at the All England Club. He’s won the first time majors of the year, and with a successful foot treatment, he will be full of confidence that he can add a third Wimbledon title to his name.
Prediction – Nadal in 3 sets
Serena Williams vs Harmony Tan
The last time we saw Serena play a singles match was in the first round of last year’s tournament, which ended in a horrifying injury. Fast-forward a year, she is back and will look to put those demons to bed against the world number 114, Harmony Tan. Although it’s hard to predict Serena’s level, she played two doubles matches at Eastbourne last week with Ons Jabeur and looked comfortable back on the court. Tan will hope to take advantage of Serena’s lack of match practice, but if the 7-time Wimbledon champion’s serve is firing, it could be a tough day for Harmony.
Prediction – Serena in 3 sets
Court 1
Heather Watson vs Tamara Korpatsch – To finish
Heather Watson and Tamara Korpatsch return to complete their match from yesterday. Watson and Korpatsch split the first two sets, so both players will hope to book their place in the second round. It’s a fairy-tale story for Tamara, having qualified for her first main draw at Wimbledon at 27. However, the home crowd support should help Heather get over the finish line.
Prediction – Watson in 3 sets
Simona Help (16) vs KarolÃna Muchová
A blockbuster first-round match between the 2019 Wimbledon Champion and former number 1, Simona Halep and the two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Karolina Muchova. Halep has shown some impressive grass-court tennis this year, reaching the semi-finals in Birmingham and Bad Homburg. Injuries have halted Muchova’s rise in the past few years, but she seems to be getting back to her best, having reached the French Open third-round last month.
Prediction – Halep in 2 sets
Stefanos Tsitsipas (4) vs Alexander Ritschard
Stefanos Tsititpas will be looking to improve his Wimbledon record, losing in the first round in his last two appearances. He has shown improvement on the grass, having won his first tour-level grass-court title last week in Mallorca. The qualifier, Alexander Ritschard, has done well to reach his first major draw but shouldn’t pose any threat to the Greek.
Prediction – Tsitsipas in 3 sets
Matches to watch
Felix Auger Aliassime (6) vs Maxime Cressy
An extremely tough match for Auger-Aliassime against the serve and volley specialist. I spy an upset.
Prediction – Cressy in 5 sets
Yulia Putintseva (27) vs Alize Cornet
The French veteran, Cornet knows exactly how to play on the biggest stages, having tied the record for competing in the most consecutive major tournaments (tied with Ai Sugiyama at 62). Putintseva has never progressed past the second round at Wimbledon, so this should be Cornet’s match to win.
Prediction – Cornet in 2 sets
Taylor Fritz (11) vs Lorenzo Musetti
The number 1 American faces a tough test against the talented Lorenzo Musetti from Italy. Musetti has the game to win but is too inconsistent, so Fritz should come through this.
Prediction – Fritz in 4 sets
Jessica Pegula (8) vs. Donna Vekic
Pegula has reached the quarter-final of the last two majors but the former number 19, Vekic is experienced on the grass, so will cause an upset
Prediction – Vekic in 3 sets
Qinwen Zheng vs Sloane Stephens
The promising youngster Zheng took Swiatek to three sets at the French Open, so she has the game to trouble the best. This will be a tough match for Stephens.
Prediction – Stephens in 3 sets
