Wimbledon Draw Predictions: R1

by TN

It’s time for the third and arguably most prestigious slam of the year: Wimbledon! This also means it’s time for some TennisNerd predictions. The French Open predictions went very well with 75% correct score, but I honestly think it will be tougher this time with grass being a special surface where specialists rule and ranking upsets tend to happen. With that in mind, I didn’t see that many upsets coming in the first round of the Wimbledon draw, but there are a few matches I’m in two minds about.

These are my predictions for Wimbledon round 1:

There are some extra interesting matches in this first round:

Kohlschreiber vs Herbert. Herbert is a doubles specialist who has a great volley and a good serve. Is it enough against Kohlschreiber who also likes it on the green stuff ? I don’t think so, but I don’t think it’s going to be an easy win for Kohlschreiber.

Ferrer vs Sela. Grass is not Ferrer’s favorite surface and he hasn’t been in great form this year. Sela is dangerous when in the right mood. Potential upset.

Sock vs Gulbis. Not an easy draw for America’s great hope Jack Sock who loves the clay more than the grass. If Gulbis is in the right mindset he can very well win.

Chardy vs Monfils. Two guys who rarely do great results on grass. Monfils is the favorite, but this is a coin-toss for me.

Dimitrov vs Fratangelo. Dimitrov has had a pretty much horrible year for a player of his standard and will be tested against the up-and-coming American, but I do think he will pull through. But Fratangelo should be able to grab a set at least.

Tipsarevic vs Simon. Tipsarevic is back and he will be a threat even for veteran Simon. Think the Frenchman will benefit from more match practice however.

Karlovic vs Coric. NOT an easy start for the #Nextgen player. I think Karlovic will serve his way through this one.

Groth vs Nishikori. I saw Groth up close in Stuttgart and his serve is a thing of wonder. However, Nishikori is a top 10 players for a reason and will find a way to break and win.

Thiem vs Mayer. Mayer won in Halle and Thiem won in Stuttgart. Two players in great form. Thiem will outlast Mayer in five sets.

Verdasco vs Tomic. Verdasco looks to be in good form of late and Tomic you never know with. Another difficult match to predict. I enjoy watching Verdasco’s game more so I think he’ll win this one.

Wawrinka vs Fritz. Not an easy start for Wawrinka but over five sets he will prevail. Will likely be a good match to watch!

Isner vs Baghdatis. Bagdahtis likes the grass and is looking more and more like his old self lately. Still, Isner will serve lights-out tennis and I think he’ll win in five sets.

Kyrgios vs Stepanek. Young and cocky vs old, tricky and annoying (to play against). Kyrgios firepower will prevail but should be a fun match to watch.
