Tennisnerd is hereby proudly introducing the Ernests “Hemingway” Gulbis Tennis Academy. You’re welcome. Now listen up you idiots!* 1. Don’t eat before the match. Not eating makes you reach zero blood sugar quickly and will make you extra furious as you go along pummelling that yellow ball (or opponent). 2. Drink heavily the night before. Because you’re entitled to it and it will make you even more furious the next day. Life’s a joke! Hah! 3. If possible: Sleep with random girls without protection. Because who cares really? You’re rich. 4. Make sure to shake your opponents tennis bag in the …

In the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters Fabio Fognini took a Sunday (really Monday) walk, as he usually does in matches, and suddenly found himself down 7-5 5-2 30-0 against talented clay-courter Joao Sousa. Then he seemed to tell himself to stop walking and start running and suddenly he had turned the match around, winning in the end with 5-7 7-5 6-4 and booking himself a place against Robredo in the 2nd round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Fognini said after the match:Â “I’m not happy today. I was I think a bit lucky. It was a really difficult …
Being spoiled with the era of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray – I’m worried that the coming generation won’t be up to the same standard. I know it’s almost impossible to reach the drama of the last 8-9 years, but I want to keep watching tennis and I want to enjoy it to the max. Federer drew me back to the game after a stint of disenchantment and I would hate to lose that passion again. So I keep hoping we get another back of truly great players to keep the sport alive and kicking for many years to come. …
This week’s what’s up. What’s up Ernest Gulbis? You’re losing first rounds left and right. What’s up with that? You need to get your shit together man! Hire a new coach. Stop drinking. Get yourself in shape. Wasted talent is a horrible thing to see. What’s up Fernando Verdasco? Weren’t you going to show Milos Raonic how to win on clay? You got to start winning again. Beat those confidence demons away with that beautiful forehand of yours. We know you can do better than this! What’s up Roger Federer? Please show all the doubters that this is not your …
Nadal again. Of course. No one would have thought anything different. But he lost a set. He had to fight off Ferrer, and he didn’t look quite as impossible to beat as last week. 7-5 6-2 in the final. It was a rainy, patchy affair, extremely well played at times. Here is the best point by far: http://www.tennistv.com/tennistv/20100502/atp-rome-hot-shot-final_2252185_2041550 But there are others things to say about Rome Masters than just “Vamos Rafa”. Spaniards on clay Yes, they are always a force on the red stuff and we were on match away from having two all-Spanish semi-finals. Verdasco and Ferrer both …
This man made the heart of many tennis fans stop yesterday for a little while. He fought the clay king with all his might and was close, oh so close, to getting the impossible W. Yesterday’s match against Nadal in the Rome Masters semi-final was the best match so far this clay season and hopefully we will see much more from this talented 21-year old. By watching Gulbis you can’t help to notice how much the game has changed over the years. Today you need to have basically every shot in the book to be a top player, it is …
