Fabio Fognini surprised us all by becoming the only player so far in history to beat Nadal from two sets down (previously Rafa was 151-0 in matches where he lead by two sets). It was a topsy-turvy affair with lots of breaks, unforced errors and 70 spectacular winners coming out of Fognini’s racquet. The scoreline in the end: 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 in Fognini’s favour. Nadal is having a horrible year by his lofty standards, but despite losing after four hours to a guy he had a serious argument with in Hamburg earlier this year, he still signed autographs. …
Fabio Fognini
In the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters Fabio Fognini took a Sunday (really Monday) walk, as he usually does in matches, and suddenly found himself down 7-5 5-2 30-0 against talented clay-courter Joao Sousa. Then he seemed to tell himself to stop walking and start running and suddenly he had turned the match around, winning in the end with 5-7 7-5 6-4 and booking himself a place against Robredo in the 2nd round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Fognini said after the match:Â “I’m not happy today. I was I think a bit lucky. It was a really difficult …
Davis Cup Quarterfinals 2014…final day. Federer remains upbeat despite the Swiss loss yesterday against far less experienced Kazakh doubles team: “I’m actually very excited for tomorrow,” Federer said. “We are still the favorites for each singles match tomorrow, but with no more margin for error and we’re aware of that.” Thats the way to look at it I guess after a disappointing loss. In today’s matches we have Wavrinka going up against Kukushkin, a player who’s ranked well below him, but who he has lost against in the past and if Stanislas wins, we have Federer against Golubev who according …
Being spoiled with the era of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray – I’m worried that the coming generation won’t be up to the same standard. I know it’s almost impossible to reach the drama of the last 8-9 years, but I want to keep watching tennis and I want to enjoy it to the max. Federer drew me back to the game after a stint of disenchantment and I would hate to lose that passion again. So I keep hoping we get another back of truly great players to keep the sport alive and kicking for many years to come. …
A lot of people are retiring during matches at the moment and it seems like we’re in some kind of injury period on the ATP Tour. Although clay can be more body-friendly to move on, the long rallies and matches (less reliance on the serve for example) really takes a toll for a lot of the players. But let’s not dwell on injuries and instead look at what happened in Rome yesterday. Little Italian man Fabio Fognini tired pretty much EVERYTHING to beat Wavrinka, but it didn’t work out for him. At least he got a set. Italian players seems …
