Monte Carlo Masters 2017 – First impressions

I’m in Monte Carlo this week, watching the Masters and I won’t be posting as regularly perhaps but wanted to give some first impressions since this is my first time at the tournament. From what I saw: Djokovic was tested against Simon in a tight three setter. Simon served for the match at 5-4 in the third, but I don’t think I was alone with the feeling that the Serb wasn’t going to give away a single point. Fabio Houdini, I mean Fognini

In the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters Fabio Fognini took a Sunday (really Monday) walk, as he usually does in matches, and suddenly found himself down 7-5 5-2 30-0 against talented clay-courter Joao Sousa. Then he seemed to tell himself to stop walking and start running and suddenly he had turned the match around, winning in the end with 5-7 7-5 6-4 and booking himself a place against Robredo in the 2nd round of the Monte Carlo Masters. An Upsetting Day in Rome

It might sound like a weird headline to you, but there were quite a few upsets in Rome Masters today. Since it’s popular to use lists I will rank them here: Drumrolll……. Upset 1: Andy “Muzza” Murray lost to Granola Bar (Granollers) after being down 6-4 4-1, getting treatment and making it back to a tie-break, winning the tie-break and then quitting the match. Apparently he has some hip problems. Not a good warm-up for Roland Garros for the Scot who hasn’t had a good clay court season. Upset 2: Stan the Man Wavrinka didn’t show up against Dolgopolov. Rafa Does It Again – Wins Madrid Open

It was never in doubt was it? (Okay, maybe at 15-30 against Ferrer). Rafa was going to take his fifth title of the year in seven tries (two finals) since his injury time-out. The king of clay was simply too good against a slightly nervous or tired Stan “the Man” Wavrinka today in the Madrid Open final and rolled over the Swiss by 6-2 6-4.
