Of course, everything is bigger in America so the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York will hold first place. When it comes to listing the biggest stadiums, it’s not really a straightforward process.
Some stadiums do have bigger capacity, but usually for other sports or events. When it’s converted to a tennis event, usually the seating capacity goes down, as tennis is not really suited for huge arenas and spectators watching from far away.
So below list should be looked at more like 5 of the biggest tennis stadiums in the world.
Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York
Sitting right at the center of the Big Apple, in Flushing Meadows, New York, you’ll find the Arthur Ashe Stadium (image above). Named after the legendary tennis player Arthur Ashe – the first black man to win the Wimbledon Championship – this sports arena didn’t hold back when it came to setting benchmarks.
With a seating capacity of around 23,700, it’s the biggest tennis venue available and it’s of course the home to the main court at the US Open Championships.
The Ashe Stadium is also renowned for its retractable roof – a game-changing feature introduced in 2016.
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, a multi-purpose venue originally designed for NFL matches but also accommodating big tennis events like The Miami Open.
During matches of American Football, this arena can take almost 80K spectators. However, for tennis events such as the ATP Miami Masters, several sections are taken off and the full capacity is around 16,500 which is still a very big venue for tennis.
Indian Wells Tennis Garden – Stadium 1
Yet another American venue, now on the west coast. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden’s Stadium 1 can take up to 16,100 people for the big events such as the Indian Wells Masters 1000.
This is one of our favorite venues and although the size, the seating arrangements allows for a great view of the court from almost any section. Add to that fantastic surroundings and a nice desert backdrop and you’ll have a superb tennis stadium.
The venue actually has 29 courts, but Stadium 1 taking the huge numbers of spectators and that’s where you’ll see the top names playing.
Accor Arena, Paris
Situated in the Bercy neighbourhood in Paris, the Accor Arena is a multi-purpose stadium hosting sports events, concerts and much more. It was opened in 1984 and nowadays they can take up to 15,000 tennis fans for big events.
This is the home of the Rolex Paris Masters 1000 played in the end of every year.
Beijing National Tennis Stadium
For the last big tennis venue on the list, we head over to China and the capital Beijing where the Beijing National Tennis Stadium can now really be considered one of the top tennis stadiums worldwide.
It was opened back in 2007 for the Beijing Olympics. Regarding tennis, it now hosts an ATP 500 and a WTA 1000 event, as well as the annual China Open, at the Diamond Court. The stadium can take up to 15,000 spectators when fully packed.
