We are entering the really competitive matches now in the 2nd part of Wimbledon. The last match of Tuesday 9th July, day nine of the Championships, will give us 3rd seed Carlos Alcaraz vs 12th seed Tommy Paul.
The 13th ranked Tommy Paul is showing great form as of late and this is actually the furthest he has reached in Wimbledon. So far he’s showing a 31-10 record this season and fantastic 10-1 on grass courts.
Paul recently won the Queen’s Club ATP here in London and so far he took out Pedro Martinez, Otto Virtanen, Alexander Bublik and Roberto Bautista Agut to reach this clash with Alcaraz.
World no 2, Carlitos, has bounced back nicely from the Queen’s Club loss to Jack Draper and shown a solid game and consistency in the first week of the Championship. He started his campaign with solid straight set wins over Estonian mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vukic before going through two hard-fought battles with Tiafoe and Humbert.
This will be another huge test for Alcaraz who still seem to be looking for his best form, while still getting the results he need. I mean, he’s is 12-1 in his last 13 matches…
H2H Alcaraz vs Paul
These two aggressive-style players have met four times and are all even at 2-2. The last meeting was won by the Spaniard at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati of 2023.
Note that they have never met on grass before.
Predictions and Odds
This is a tough one. Paul is the player in slightly better form at the moment and enjoys the grass. A player like Alcaraz will always be strong in these type of important matches at the end of major tournaments though, and it’s always a strength to win even when you’re not at your best.
Paul him self stated “I’m really excited for the matchup.” and we understand him. This might be one of the better matches of the tournament.
In the end I think Alcaraz, the defending champion, will progress to the semi’s and these are our odds for the match;
- Over 0.5, Total Number of Tiebreaks – 1.57 | -175
- Total Games, Over 39.5 – 2.00 | +100
