In the second round of the Championships we see Croatia’s Borna Coric take on the 29th seed American Frances Tiafoe in an interesting matchup on Wednesday 3rd July.
First a look at Tifaoe. Following a promising start of the season, the grass courts hasn’t been great so far for the American, with a quarterfinal loss to Jack Draper in Boss Open and a 1st round retirement at the Queen’s Club last month.
However, in the first round of Wimbledon, he surprised some viewers with a proper fightback against talent Matteo Arnaldi. Tiafoe was down two sets when he completely turned it around to finally win 6-7, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. This was actually the first time he has come back from two sets down to win a match!
As for Borna Coroc, it has been looking rather dull all year and apart from a 2nd place finish at the Open Sud de France, the Croatian hasn’t really impressed anywhere. Ahead of the Championships we haven’t seen him at any ATP tour competition either and was mostly playing challenger tournaments.
To reach this round he beat Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves in three straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
Head-to-head
Looking at their H2H, they met twice and have a win each. Coric win came all the way back in 2018 while Tiafoe won the most recent meeting at the Australian Open at the beginning of this season, 6-3, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
Predictions for Tiafoe vs Coric
Two players that hasn’t impressed a lot this year but it feels the 29th seed Tiafoe is the stronger at the moment and he will get a lot of confidence from his turnaround in the first round. Overall he moved well and played good on his first serve, promising signs.
Coric still seem a bit off his game and grass is also not his favorite surface. We’ll go for a win for the American here in the 2nd round just based on his momentum and variety in his game.
Tiafoe won in four sets earlier in the Australian Open, could be the same outcome this time.
