It’s the first round of Paris Masters, the last Masters 1000 tournament of the season, and we found a good match on Tuesday when Frances Tiafoe takes on in-form home player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

14th seed Tiafoe have shown, from time to time, this season what he can do. A strong US Open has been followed by some mixed results though and we never really know what we can expect from the American.

17-ranked Tiafoe has not been that successful outside of the US this year and he is up for a big challenge on Tuesday…

Red hot Mpetshi Perricard

On the other side of the net we find Mpetshi Perricard, that just comes from the biggest title of his career, the ATP500 event in Basel. Not only did he win it, he impressed by not dropping a single serve and only faced 3 break points in the whole tournament.

After beating Holger Rune in the semis, he faced Ben Shelton in the final. The American had no defense for the powerful serves of Perricard (22 aces) and the Frenchman took home the match 6-4, 7-6(4) and became the lowest-ranked champion in Basel since it became a tour-level event.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has now climbed to 31 in the world rankings and we don’t think it will stop there.

These two players never met on tour before.

Odds and Predictions

The odds favour Tiafoe quite heavily, and even if he is the highest ranked and most experienced player, we’re not sure we agree with the bookies here. A win for Tiafoe currently gives you a 1.60 | -162.5 odds while a win for Mpetshi Perricard gives 2.40 | +140.

It’s hard to predict matches with Frances Tiafoe and on a good day he clearly has what it takes to beat a player like Mpetshi Perricard. However, the recent form of the powerful Frenchman (who’s also playing on home soil), and the rather poor form of Tiafoe leading into this tournament, leads us to look at other odds.
