Finding the best tennis strings for your racquet

by Jonas Eriksson

Yes, thats my latest quest – finding the best tennis strings. Or maybe I shouldn’t call it “the best”, but just the tennis strings that fit my game the best. I have decided to start testing four different strings:

Babolat RPM Blast
Nadal’s string of choice and a super-spin-friendly string. Has received decent reviews. Curious about what it can do on my Head IG Prestige MP and my Wilson Pro Staff Six.One 90 BLX (the latter being the racquet I play with the most). Description of the Babolat RPM Blast: The string of choice for Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, this durable co-poly string is very, very spin friendly. The slick surface of RPM Blast allows the main strings to slide out of alignment, grab the ball and then snap back to add spin to the shot. While all co-poly monofilaments do this to some extent, our lab tests confirm that RPM Blast is exceptional in this regard. Though RPM Blast offers a slightly softer feel than traditional polyesters, it is by no means the softest co-poly available. It is an ideal choice for big hitters with heavier racquets seeking maximum control, durability, and spin.

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g A string that has received incredible reviews. Description of the Tecnifibre X-One Biphase 17g:
The X-One Biphase string uses High Heat Capacity (H2C) fibers which allows the use of an innovative chemical treatment process called Trimerization. This new process increases the cohesion between chemical molecule links through extreme variations in temperature to result in ultimate dynamic efficiency (power) and exceptional feel. The new patented Biphasic process, with its visible marks on the string, extends string life by 20% and offers increased spin. Similar to its leading string, NRG2, the multifilament fibers within this string are immersed in polyurethane to provide shock absorption and optimum comfort.

Yonex Poly Tour Pro 125
A very inexpensive string that is reviewed as a great string on Stringforum.net. Description of the Yonex Poly Tour Pro 125: Polyester string which achieves greater durability, now used by the world’s top players. It provides a comfortable feeling, suppressing shoulder and elbow fatigue.

Luxilon Big Banger Alu Power
I’ve played this a while and will compare with it using both rackets and different tensions. A great-playing string that packs a punch, but I’m looking for something softer and more comfortable.

Solinco Tour Bite 16L I’ve heard great things about this string and had to order it to see / try it for myself. Description of Solinco Tour Bite 16L: The Solinco Tour Bite is a newly developed, high-performance and versatile polyester string designed to generate extreme power and intense spin and bite. It utilizes an innovative, high-powered polyester monofilament fiber designed and shaped to generate maximum power while amplifying the spin and bite intensity of the ball.

Reviews to come! I’m starting with the Babolat RPM Blast. Wish me luck!
