Wilson has introduced the dampening material Countervail in all their product lines (Burn, Ultra, Blade) except for the Pro Staff. Now it’s time for most legendary line to get an update.
The Wilson Pro Staff line has a long and legendary heritage with players such as Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Stefan Edberg using the racquets and current ambassadors being Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov and Roberto Bautista Agut to name a few.
What racquets will be released then and will the super popular Wilson Pro Staff RF 97 Autograph suddenly include Countervail?
First of all, a Wilson Pro Staff 97 Countervail Tour has been revealed, looking like this:
The specs for the Wilson Pro Staff 97 Countervail Tour are (unstrung): 315 grams, 21,5 mm beam width, 97 sq inches racquet face, 16×19 string pattern and 31 cm balance.
There will also be a Wilson Pro Staff 97 Countervail Light (unstrung specs): 290 grams, 23 mm beam width, 97 sq inches racquet face, 16,19 string pattern and 32,5 cm balance.
It doesn’t seem like Wilson will release a Countervail edition of the Wilson Pro Staff RF 97 Autograph at this point, after all, this is Federer’s signature racquet and should remain unchanged unless he changes to a different layup or technology.
An important question here is whether the addition of the dampening material countervail have a large effect on the playability of the Wilson Pro Staff racquets? I’m looking forward to testing them myself because in my experience countervail has worked well in some racquets and poor in others. The Wilson Burn 100 CV really benefitted from some extra dampening, but the Wilson Blade 98 CV was a step back in my opinion. The Wilson Ultra with Countervail was a decent racquet, but nothing special. There it will be interesting to see how it affects the Pro Staff line racquets.
How do you think the Wilson Pro Staff 97 with Countervail will play? Are you keen to try one? Please comment below.Â
The Wilson Pro Staff 97 with Countervail doesn’t yet have a release date. More info to come soon!

what happened to the PS 95s? they were so popular and beloved!
Did Wilson just think: “Well, Roger moved on to 97, so we cant market or make a less forgiving racquet than his, especially when his will be the top of the line” ?
Stuff like this also makes consumers to potentially move away from great racquets that can fit their games better than a 95+ racquet just because “Roger doesnt use smaller than 97, so why should you?” mentality.
Anyways, here hoping they also re-release an RF90 like they did with the 85….jw which model or will it be a frankenstein of all 90s put together lol
Hi Luis,
Good question. I think they just felt like 95 inch racquets are a thing of “the past” but who knows if they reintroduce it in a while like they have with both the PS 85 and the 6.1 95.
I think we might even see a re-release of the RF90!
I actually played with the re-release of the PS85 yesterday and it is a JOY to play with!
