These are two of the strongest teams in the contest, but while Serbia did not drop a set against Great Britain in their two singles matches (Kecmanovic had to fight for his 7-6 7-6 win over Draper, while Djokovic was clinical against Norrie 6-4 6-4), Italy had to finish their encounter against the Netherlands in the doubles.
Does this mean anything for the match prediction? No, not really. The match should be even on paper. Both teams have strong singles players as well as doubles teams.
Will we see another Sinner vs Djokovic? Or will it be Djokovic vs Arnaldi and Sinner vs Kecmanovic? We cannot know that yet, but although Djokovic is a favorite against anyone he plays, there is also a second match that is difficult to predict. Djokovic is also not a natural doubles players so that is where it feels more like a coin toss.

Can Italy win the Davis Cup?
Yes, alongside Serbia and Australia, they are the clear favorites. Just checking the ATP rankings, there are six Italians only in the top 100. But Serbia has four and the lowest ranked is #55 in Kecmanovic.
But, our favorite to win the trophy, Australia, has 8 players in the ATP 100. More importantly, they have the best doubles team in the competition in Purcell and Ebden. Italy showed strength against Netherlands. Youngster Arnaldi lost on the finish line (third set tie-break) against Van de Zandschulp, but Sinner showed superiority against the talented Griekspoor.
It got down to the doubles, where Sinner and Sonego managed to beat Kolhoof and Griekspoor in straight sets. A rough day in the office for Griekspoor, especially.
The case for Serbia
Italy vs Serbia is a TIGHT match. Either team can win. Djokovic can be the one who settles it all, which is the usual spot for him.
Not having to play a doubles match against Great Britain was a sign of strength, but also did not give us much information about Djokovic is feeling his doubles game.
There is this famous match with Novak and Troicki from the Davis Cup where Djokovic was visibly frustrated by Troicki’s level. This will not happen this time around, as Troicki is the captain and not on the court. And Djokovic has become even better at handling these situations. But it’s generally always interesting to see how the absolute best players in the world perform in doubles.
The case for Serbia is Djokovic. After his 2023, they might not need anything else.
But we are still more taken by Italy in this situation, so…
