The 2024 Erste Bank Open in Vienna is underway and we’ve got some exciting clashes already from the start. This ATP 500 event will be the last tournament in the career of Dominic Thiem and he gets to say goodbye in front of his home fans. This is also where he won his last ATP title back in 2019.

Currently world no 318, the once 3rd ranked in the world, is not the same player we once enjoyed watching but hopefully he can make a mark in his last show on the tour.

On Tuesday evening we’ll see the Austrian in action when he takes on Italian talent Luciano Darderi in their first match of the Vienna ATP.

Thiem vs Darderi

Dominic Thiem, a legend in the game, has had a rough few years. Never really recovering from that wrist surgery back in 2021, the 31-year-old now hopes to finish off his career with some decent performances. Fact is that the 2020 US Open winner only won one (!) main draw match so far on the ATP tour in 2024.

Out of the total of 10 matches he played this year, he got a total of 2 wins, the other one being a Davis Cup tie vs Michael Agwi.

Todays opponent, Luciano Darderi, has really stepped up his game this year and climbed to 42nd spot in the ATP rankings.

This season has seen him win his first clay title (Cordoba Open) and we’ve also seen a few other impressive performances on the red dirt. So far he has 23-23 in win/loss record for the year.

However, the Italian seem to be in a bad period in the moment, entering the Vienna event on a 7-match losing streak. It seems he is struggling a bit physically and it should also be mentioned Darderi has hardly any experience on indoor hard courts. He played the recent Stockholm event but lost there to Matteo Berrettini.

What about the H2H? These two players have never met before.

Odds and Predictions

We can see that the sportsbooks keep Darderi as favorite at odds 1.56 | -175 while a win for Thiem gives 2.38 | +137.5.

Darderi is clearly a better player than Thiem this year but his recent slump in form and inexperience on indoor hard-courts will be a decent chance for the home favorite to claim what might be a final win of his career. Thiem has a 58% win record on hard court in his career and won 6 titles on this surface.

We think he will at least claim one set and we found good value in seeing a 3-set match:

Our bet: Exact Sets 3 at odds 2.27 | +125.
