Rybakina vs Svitolina Preview

Elena Rybakina

Rybakina came to Wimbledon as one of four leaders in the betting odds. With Iga Swiatek (lost third round), Coco Gauff (lost fourth round) and Aryna Sabalenka (late withdrawal) all out of the equation, she’s now the clear favorite to win the tournament.

Ahead of Wimbledon, Rybakina had been having an excellent season. She was 35-7 for the year, with three titles in Stuttgart, Abu Dhabi and Brisbane, plus a handful of other strong results.

The past 10 days, she’s only built on this momentum. All but one of her matches have been strongly one-sided. First, she saw off Elena Gabriela for the loss of just four games. Then, she outlasted Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, before tearing past Caroline Wozniacki and Anna Kalinskaya, losing only four games across both combined.

Elina Svitolina

Svitolina’s season has been far more sedate. She came to London with a record of 18-12 on the year, with her ranking sitting at No 21 in the world. Her highlights have included round-of-16 runs at both Grand Slams this year, plus a loss in the final of the ASB Classic to Coco Gauff.

Outside of these results, however, Svitolina has been quiet. She’s still only been back on Tour for less than 18 months though, having had over a year away to give birth to her daughter.

At Wimbledon the past 10 days, she’s turned on her Grand Slam magic once again. First, she outlasted Magda Linette, winning an epic 7-5, 6-7(9), 6-3, before running past Jule Niemeier, No 10 seed Ons Jabeur and Xinyu Wang, all in straight sets.

Rybakina vs Svitolina Prediction

This time last year, Svitolina faced off against Swiatek as a heavy underdog in the Wimbledon quarter-finals and prevailed. We don’t think lightning will strike twice, however.

Rybakina is a strong favorite in this match up for good reason. The pair met on clay just two months ago, with Rybakina easily winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Switching surfaces to clay will only enhance the No 4 seed’s advantage over Svitolina, with her flat groundstrokes and powerful serve gaining extra pay from the slick grass.

We expect that Rybakina will solidify her position as the favorite to win Wimbledon 2024 by putting on a dominant performance against Svitolina, who will fall one match short of equalling her impressive run last year.

Prediction: Rybakina to win in two sets.
