Korda is not the top favorite to win the US Open, and his odds of winning could be better. Korda’s Form in 2024
Korda’s year overall has been decent, albeit not spectacular. He has been playing much better lately, though, and it’s not a surprise. Korda is back home on courts he knows and loves, with his recent Washington Open run the confidence-building run he needed.
With a few solid wins in New York, he could go deep. He’s been in really solid shape lately, with the early exit in Cincinnati the only bad result. Outside of that, this year, Korda has been 17-8 on hard courts. Half of that came in the last month, though.
US Open Draw
The world No 16 has got a pretty tricky US Open draw. Navigating some of these early matchups will be tricky. In the first round, he faces Corentin Moutet, for example – a challenging player who will be looking forward to their match.
Korda barely won their previous encounter, and the Frenchman has been waiting for revenge for a very long time. What better way to get revenge than to beat the home favorite in New York?
If he does beat him, it’s either Fabio Fognini or Tomas Machac in the second round. That won’t be easy either. After that, it’s likely Alejandro Tabilo, who is fairly beatable, at least on hard courts. But then in the fourth round, it would be Carlos Alcaraz, and Korda hasn’t been good against him. Alcaraz leads 4-1.
The Case for Korda Winning the US Open 2024
Korda is the perfect player to do well in New York. He’s a tall baseliner who has tremendous power on and off the ground. The serve gives him a major boost in New York because it is a relatively quick court, all things considered. It’s apparently as fast as ever this year, which should benefit his play.
The Serve
Korda has a strong serve that can also be quite streaky. He doesn’t always have it on point, but on most days, he’s able to create lots of pressure with it. New York allows for that, especially on Arthur Ashe, where there is no wind. You’re basically indoors and allowed to bombard away.
Forehand
The forehand is Korda’s signature weapon. Like the rest of his skillset, it’s a very streaky weapon. On some days, it’s one of the top forehands and impossible to counter, but on other days, it gets him in a fair amount of trouble.
Backhand
Korda’s backhand is underrated because it is stable on most days. He doesn’t always play aggressively, but he certainly has the ability to do so on the backhand wing. This is important because against a player like Alcaraz, he’ll feel lots of pressure on that side.
US Open Experience
Korda is no stranger to playing in New York. He’s done it for a few years now, even though he hasn’t been very lucky with the draws in the past, having to play some tough opponents.Â
We haven’t really seen a good run from him here. However, with the recent bump in form and an added level of motivation, he should be able to play well here.
Our prediction: Round of 16
While Korda ultimately does possess the weapons to make a deep run at the event, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round seems like a bit too much for him.
He has beaten Alcaraz in the past, but that was in Monte-Carlo a few years ago. The Spaniard is a far better player right now, and he’s been a really tough matchup for Korda since then. None of the matches between the two recently have looked particularly close.
