It is not a huge surprise to see headlines like Team Canada Wins the Davis Cup 2022. The ATP Cup win earlier in the year showed the way.
Canada Wins the Davis Cup
It is Canada’s first Davis Cup win after they lost the final to Spain in 2019. With a team led by the talented duo, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, you know they would be dangerous in this new Davis Cup format. The final against Australia was a dominant display from the Canadians, with Shapovalov beating Kokkinakis 6-2 6-4 and Aliassime sealing the deal with a 6-3 6-4 win against de Minaur.
“The emotions are tough to describe,” Auger-Aliassime said, according to daviscup.com. “Denis [Shapovalov] and I grew up together, dreaming of these types of stages, dreaming of winning the Davis Cup. It’s a great moment for myself and for the country.”
Canada also defeated Germany and Italy on the way to their first Davis Cup title.
Aliassime in 2023
Auger-Aliassime had an astonishing 2022 season, with a 60-27 record, four ATP titles (he had not won one before this year!) an ATP Cup trophy, and a Davis Cup win. Working with Toni Nadal seems to be paying off.
It will be fascinating to follow his progress in 2023. If he can keep this up, he can surely fight for Grand Slam titles alongside Djokovic, Nadal, Alcaraz, and the rest.
