Netflix are producing a tennis documentary series

by Jonas Eriksson

Have you seen Drive to Survive? Netflix are producing a tennis documentary series in the same style. Filming is underway.

Netflix are producing a documentary series with Drive to Survive season one maker Box to Box films. The series is produced in partnership with the ATP Tour, ATP media, WTA Tour and Grand Slam Tournaments. The slogan is: Get ready for access to professional tennis like you’ve never seen before.

They are beginning at the 2022 Australian Open, which makes me curious if they can create the same kind of format and drama like they did with the Formula 1. The big benefit of Drive to Survive is that it widened and expanded the excitement around the sport. This could potentially be a pretty big deal for tennis, a sport that has been growing during the pandemic.

This is from the press release on the official ATP Tour website

“We are excited to continue bolstering our lineup of sports programming with this behind-the-scenes documentary series,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix Vice President of Unscripted and Documentary Series. “Tennis is beloved all over the world, with high-stakes tournaments hopping across continents and athletes hailing from countless countries. Through this historic partnership with the four Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Tour, WTA Tour, and ATP Media, the series will be packed with rare access and rich personal stories that are sure to draw in longtime fans and new audiences alike.”

Will you watch it?

I’m not a fan of Formula 1 personally, but I felt that Drive to Survive really brought some exciting behind-the-scenes aspect of the sport that I had no idea existed. I hope they can do the same for tennis to people who are perhaps not so intimately familiar with the sport. After a few recent scandals, tennis needs some positive PR and a Netflix series is a great start.
