Daniil Medvedev vs Alexei Popyrin, Paris Masters, Preview and Predictions

medvedev

Day 3 of the Paris Masters and todays pick will be from an interesting match where 4th seed Daniil Medvedev takes on Alexei Popyrin.

No 5 ranked Medvedev has not won a title yet this season, a fact that will surprise some people out there. Can he put together a great run here in Paris or at the season finale in Turin? Well, he’s still in good form, already qualified for the ATP finals and he is one of the hardest players to beat. The results has not been as fantastic as the beginning of the year but we think the 28-year-old has a decent chance at this Masters tournament.

Medvedev won the title here back in 2020 and reached the final the year after.

The Russian is in for a challenge though, in the 2nd round, when he’s up against Alexei Popyrin. The Canadian has a very high top level of his game and he looks in fine form after beating Berrettini in straight sets in the first round here in Paris. With that match he is at 27-21 in wins/losses for the season.

The 2024 season has been the best of his career even though his performances are quite mixed and he’s still missing some consistency. Highlight is of course that impressive Montreal Open title and we also remember him beating Djokovic at the US Open.

H2H

This will be the fourth meeting between Medvedev and Popyrin and so far the Russian has a solid 3-0 lead. Their last meeting was a thriller though, at the ATP Miami 2021 (7-6(3) 6-7(7) 6-4).

Predictions and Odds – Medvedev vs Popyrin

Medvedev is big favorite to progress to the third round with the betting odds of 1.38 | -275 of beating Popyrin, while the Canadian gives 3.20 | +220 for a victory on Wednesday.

These are two players with quite mixed results all season but Medvedev usually likes it here in Paris and he needs to turn around his recent poor records on hard courts, which is clearly his favorite, and especially indoor.

Popyrin will have to be at his best to have a chance here. His serve and net game looks solid lately, if he can improve his break-point conversions and continue his effectiveness at important points, Medvedev might be in for a tough clash.

Prediction: It might not be an easy first match for Medvedev but we think he will claim the victory here based on experience, their previous meetings and past performances at the Paris Masters,
