Who is Yunchaokete Bu?

by Jonas Eriksson

Chinese tennis player, Yunchaokete Bu, has captured the attention of the tennis world with stunning wins at the ATP tournament in Beijing. Who is Yunchaokete Bu?

22-year-old, Yunchaokete Bu is ranked 96 in the world currently and will make a significant jump in the rankings after his success in the Chinese capital.

Bu has only been pro since January 2022, but the potential is clear. He has defeated Shang, Musetti and Rublev in Beijing. All impressive wins that has brought him into a mouthwatering semi-final against Jannik Sinner.

Bu has faced Sinner before and it was not positive for the Chinese player, but he is currently playing the tennis of his life, while the Italian world number one might have other things on his mind (the doping case with WADA, for example). Maybe he has a chance? When you’re reading this, you might already know the score.

A Bu win gives approximately ten (!) times your bet on the best tennis betting sites, which is a clear indication of how much of a favorite Sinner is.

Yunchaokete Bu’s racquet

Bu is sponsored by Yonex and has been playing with an Ezone 98 for his professional career. We don’t know Bu’s racquet specs, so if you do, please comment below.

Bu is yet another pro player who uses a natural gut hybrid. He strings natural gut in the mains and most likely a string like Yonex Poly Tour Pro or Strike in the crosses. This setup will give him extra power and comfort over using a full bed of poly strings.

If you wonder about the differences between multifilament and monofilament strings, we recommend checking out the Tennisnerd Guide to Racquets and Strings.

We have noticed Yonex having more and more sponsored players in the top 100 rankings compared to some years back, so the Japanese manufacturer is definitely moving in the right direction in its battle against mainstream brands like Wilson, HEAD and Babolat.

Chinese tennis is better than ever

China has more players at the top 100 of the tennis world than ever before, both on the ATP and WTA tours. On the ATP we have Shang, Zhang and Bu, all making strides.

On the WTA, Zheng is a top-ten player, Yuan is top 50, Xinyu Wang, Yafan Wang and Xiyu Wang are top 100 alongside Lin Zhu.

Chinese tennis is booming and I think we can expect more strong results from them in the near future.

Which player do you think will reach the furthest up the rankings?

Erm Navratilova was using Yonex racquets in the 80s…

I think Yonex is as mainstream as it comes.

I don’t have the numbers but definitely seem to be a lot more Yonex racquets at the top of the tours (and further down for that matter) than Head or now probably even Babolat

It’s certainly not necessarily representative but around me (and in the wider junior circuits beyond) nobody uses Head racquets and even Babolat is mainly confined to a slightly older crowd (but not as old as the Wilson Pro Staff demo) from when they were so popular with juniors 10 years back or so. But Yonexes are everywhere.
