It seems like world number one on the WTA Tour, Iga Swiatek, can’t lose. She is up to 27 match wins in a row and ready for the Rome final.
Her opponent, Ons Jabeur, one of the most entertaining players to watch on the women’s tour in my opinion, might have something to say about that statement though. She is on her own streak and won the Madrid Masters. This means we have two highly in-form players in the Rome final. Iga Swiatek can’t lose? Well at some point she will, but I think she might go undefeated for the entire clay court season. This means she will win another French Open.
How did this evolution happen? Is it because Ash Barty retired? Or did she have this potential for domination all along? I think definitely the latter. Swiatek hits an ATP style ball and is extremely tough mentally. The way she won her first Grand Slam at the French Open 2020, not dropping a set, was a sign of things to come. She is especially tough on clay, where she can generate loads of spin and hit fierce angles.

I was initially skeptical when Iga announced a new racquet sponsor after winning the French Open with her Prince Textreme Tour 100 290. She now has her own signature IGA 298 model with Tecnifibre, which is actually a racquet I enjoy a lot myself. It’s powerful and maneuverable without being harsh on the arm (thanks to the foam-filling). I reviewed the first edition IGA here and the new 2022 version is only a design and name update.
