HEAD Speed MP and Pro Black series

HEAD has released a new paint job for their most popular racquet line. Let’s have a look at the HEAD Speed MP and Pro Black.

The reason for this paint job update is, from what I’ve heard, that Djokovic is not a huge fan of predominantly white racquets due to impacting his vision when zoning in on the ball (a pro player watches the ball like a hawk). Federer also had an issue with the white at the sides of the Tuxedo edition of the Wilson Pro Staff RF 97, so this is not a unique issue. There has also been a history of a ltd edition blacked-out Speed (previously the “X”), maybe due to the same reason though.

No matter why HEAD released this paint job, it’s a great looking one. You can’t go wrong with blacked-out racquets it seems – most tennis players seem to love them, although some of the comments on my Instagram post voiced the contrary (people missed the paint contrast that HEAD applies for most of their racquets).

Who should play with the Speed racquets?

The HEAD Speed racquets are best suited towards the aggressive baseliner. The MP is easier to swing, offers a bit more spin potential thanks to the 16×19 string pattern and some extra power with the slightly stiffer layup. The Pro is more control-oriented with an 18×20 string pattern and a lower flex rating. It’s also heavier to be able to block back shots better and produced a weightier shot.

I reviewed the HEAD Speed Pro and MP a while back, but my game and preferences has changed since then and I will now revisit them and review the HEAD Speed Pro and MP black series in the coming weeks.

The Speed line of racquets is in the middle of HEAD’s range of racquet series. It will give you more power than the Prestige, Radical or Gravity, but not quite the same power and spin as the Instinct or the Extreme series. It’s called Speed due to its aerodynamic design but also thinner beam than most 100 sq inch tweener-style racquets.HEAD has released a new paint job for their most popular racquet line.
