Zverev vs Etcheverry Preview
The last time these two played was at last year’s Roland Garros, where Etcheverry pushed Zverev quite hard and even won a set. The match being played on clay certainly boosted the Argentine’s chances.
This one will be played on hard courts, and while Etcheverry is still solid on them, he’s not as good on hard courts as he is on clay.
Another thing that’s different from last time is that Etcheverry is not playing as well as he was back in May. Zverev, arguably, is playing even better, but what adds value to this match is the way the German has changed his approach.
Last year, Zverev largely sat at the baseline and absorbed his opponent’s power. Etcheverry has plenty of power, and that’s not the ideal way to play against him. Taking it to him and pushing him around is the proper way to attack, and Zverev has been playing more like that this year.
The world No 4 has been very consistent this year, especially when attacking. His serve is also a major weapon, so overall, we have a player who is likely going to attack Etcheverry, and that will work.
We expect Zverev to cruise comfortably in this one because he’s a cut above Etcheverry and has the game plan to defuse the Argentinian. Etcheverry is also coming off a five-set match, which is likely to leave him quite fatigued.
With all those struggles and his general inconsistencies, we expect Zverev won’t have any issues winning this match in straight sets. He seems to have gotten the tough match out of his way in the opening round – there’s always at least one early on in Grand Slams for Zverev – and is now likely to keep cruising until things heat up in the second week.
